The College Admissions Process Can be a Sensitive Subject Over the Holidays – Here’s How to Approach It The holidays can bring together friends and family members that may not be able to see each other frequently, and that can result in a lot of catching up over dinner conversation – especially when a student is applying to college. It’s not unusual for family members to default to the college conversation as soon as they see a high school senior, but sometimes this can unintentionally lead to additional stress or students just having the same discussion over and over again. Here’s how parents, students, and family members can approach the college conversation this Thanksgiving. While applying to college is exciting, it can be stressful for students and is often on their mind 24/7. Just like adults may not want to talk about work over their holiday break, some students want to avoid thinking about college while they enjoy some much-needed rest and relaxation. That doesn’t mean the topic should be avoided altogether, especially with younger students who might be excitedly starting their college prep journey, but parents and family members can be more mindful when talking about the college admissions process. Be Curious, Not DemandingEspecially when speaking with younger students about their college hopes and dreams, ask curious questions. What interests you? What’s your favorite extracurricular activity? What type of school, large or small, excites you? Avoid demanding questions, especially for seniors in the thick of the admissions process. Questions like â€Å"Can I see your college list?† or â€Å"Let me read your application essay† can put unneeded pressure on students. Be curious and let them talk about the things they’re passionate about that may relate to their college goals instead of focusing entirely on the destination. Don’t Give Unsolicited AdviceWe can’t stress this enough. College-bound students are already receiving a plethora of advice from a number of sources. Their college counselors, teachers, parents, friends, the internet – you name it and they’re heard it. Instead of telling them what you think they should write about, where they should apply, or what it was like when you applied to college, let them lead the conversation. Keep the conversation upbeat and casual – don’t immediately pivot to SAT and ACT scores and college lists. This is a time to get to know your student now that they’ve had time this semester to explore their interests, and you can revisit the harder college prep plan after the break. If you’re a parent of a high school senior applying to college this fall, it’s important to check in without being demanding. Instead of asking to see where your student is with their Common App, ask if they need some quiet, alone time without family members around to get any work done. Offer to arrange a family outing where you take visiting guests somewhere so students have time to themselves to work, decompress, and mentally prepare for going back to school after the break. Be helpful and maintain involvement but keep a safe distance. After all, this is their journey, not yours! Students: It’s Okay to Set Boundaries Students: You may get a lot of questions about your college goals this holiday season. If it’s something you’re excited to talk about – then go for it! However, for some students it can be a sensitive topic and something they don’t wish to talk about with people other than close friends, parents, and college counselors. Maybe try to drop some hints to your parents to let them know you don’t want other family members to ask you about your college prep or applications. If a family member or friend asks you a question about college you don’t feel comfortable answering, don’t be afraid to say so. A simple reply like â€Å"I’m actually taking a break from thinking about college this week† or â€Å"I don’t know yet. Tell me what’s new with you?† can help change the conversation and (hopefully) drop the hint that this is something you’d rather not discuss. The holidays are a time for students to relax, reflect, and spend time with friends and family. This is a great time for students to take a step back and see where they are with their college prep or applications, what they need to get done once they’re back from their break, and how to tackle it. Thanksgiving break doesn’t have to be college prep focused but learning how to navigate these conversations can help both parents and students learn more about their college journey and lay the groundwork to develop a more robust plan after the holiday. Science is an organized body of knowledge that is derived from observations and that can be tested in order to be verified. Poetry can be defined in many different ways; it is relative to each person; however one of the most recognizable characteristic is the economy of words. Both poetry and science present different kinds of knowledge such that the knowledge from poetry is attributed, whereas knowledge from science discovered. Together, they provide and expand human’s knowledge. To begin with, Albert Einstein once said: â€Å"Imagination is more important than knowledge. † Poems are the combination of words to form verses of short sentences. It is for this reason that it can be said that poetry challenges the mind into thinking in different ways, expanding humans’ knowledge and leading to the openness of different ideas. Moreover, science, another way in which humans can expand their knowledge, provides knowledge through discovery. Furthermore, science provides the human with intellect about the world we live in. Science is mostly based on facts and theories. The theories will either eventually turn into facts or be disproved due to new advanced investigations. Scientists live their life seeking the ultimate truth, answers of unanswerable questions, and answers of and about things in the world we live in. It is for this reason that the knowledge attained from science is discovered. Unlike poetry, in general nothing is right in science. For example, a random person cannot say his own opinion about a certain theory because he/she can easily be disproved. Science requires lots of research and even scientific facts do not remain the ultimate fact for long. Everything is tentative in science. This does not mean that science does not provide us with knowledge. Preciousness Preciousness is a story that goes beyond the struggles of a teen-aged girl's life, but it also portrays themes of basic life. Themes like, ?letting go? and ?cultural differences? apply to almost all people in one way or another. For that reason, Preciousness is not just a story about a young girl's life, but it's a story about all of our lives. Throughout the story, the reader is presented with a series of conflicts the girl faces. Her main problem was that she had a problem with men and boys. She felt that they were evil and only wanted one thing. I feel that she lived in her own world, where she made all the rules. ?...she swallowed her coffee which the maid, scratching herself in the gloom of the kitchen, had reheated. She scarcely touched the bread which the butter failed to soften.?1 This was extremely unhealthy for her, physically and mentally. Not eating healthily will make a person weak and can lead to many diseases. She did this to have men and boys avoid her, which was also unhealthy. Man or woman, one cannot avoid life and its people. I don't feel it is possible to be psychologically fit if a person cannot interact with a certain group because of a fear they have. Being scared of a certain person in that group is normal, but the entire group is a bit extreme. Life is a learning experience, but you can't fully experience life if you avoid certain things in it. One has to face reality at some point in life, it can be done the easy way, by accepting reality, or done the hard way, by denying the truth. The main character of the story decided that it would be better if she did things the hard way. The rising action, when the two boys were approaching here on an early morning, lead to a major problem. At the climax, the two boys groped the girl. At that moment, her bubble, malignantly protecting her from the world of reality, exploded. The destruction of her bubble led to an amazing revelation that changed her life. She was no longer a girl, but a young woman. I feel that this was when she started accepting the truth about life and about whom she had become. She then understood that you couldn't avoid life. I think that there was more than one main theme in this story. Prejudice, fear, and hate are three themes that can be closely linked together. These factors play a large role in the story and in our lives. Like the girl in the story, we tend to make assumptions about other people before we actually know it's true. The main character assumes that all men and boys want that one thing. She feels that it is her place to classify other people, in this case, men. ?Afraid they would ?say something to her,? would look her up and down.?2 Even though the men didn't care about her, she still had a fear of them. People fear what they don't understand and have no control over. The girl had no control over the men and boys, so she feared what they might say or do to her. She is fearful of putting trust into men, scared of how they might take advantage of that trust. As the days built up, she developed a hatred of men. She knew that they ?knew.? I believe that neither side really knew anything truly significant about each other. The girl couldn't have known what the men knew and what they were thinking. The men probably didn't know much about the girl either. I think that the girl surrounded herself in a bubble that was much worse than reality. Repression was also a very considerable theme. For the whole time, she repressed her true self. She tried to hide what she was becoming, which was a woman. She had to learn to let go of her childhood and start accepting the responsibilities of being older and more mature. This is something everyone has either gone through, is going through, or will go through in life. It's a force of nature, like a hurricane or earthquake. It
